You might be one of the qualified and suitable candidates whose CV isn’t up to date or contains errors or just isn’t written in a digestible way. You may never get the chance to wow them at an interview. The following tips should improve your CV and help separate you from the pack.
* The most important reason you sent the CV in the first place is because you believe you have the required skills for the job advertised. For this to work effectively you need to revamp your CV for each job, designing them to answer and highlight the relevant information about yourself with regards to the job requirements; never use a standard formatted CV. If you do, do not expect great results from such a delivery. Collect enough information about the company and the job in question to know exactly what points the employers are looking for so you can match your best talents to those particular points of the requirement
* Be concise. One of the most common errors on CVs isn’t leaving out information; it’s including too much information. Sell yourself using short statements highlighting that you are punctual, reliable and presentable; that you can work by yourself or as part of a team; that you will fit in; that you will stay around for the foreseeable future, etc.
* Although the standard format of the CV has become an integral part of the recruitment process, you need to show that you are dynamic. This is your personal selling tool, so don’t be afraid to use your CV to draw attention to you. And there is no hard or fast rule that says you cannot do things differently, from my experience, people who follow the pack, just don’t get noticed. Be sure that you create a document that will be noticed! It’s not an official personnel document. It’s not a job application. It’s not a “career obituary”! And it’s not a confessional.
* When writing your CV, place yourself in the employer’s position. What would you want to see in a CV, what will grap your attention? When you can’t wait to post your CV off, you know you have a winning document.
* Identify and solve the employer’s hidden needs. You know that the requirements listed in the ad are only some of the duties. Show the employer that you understand the full range of needs and show how you can solve those needs.
* Ensure that your previous job titles don’t get in your way. If you are applying for a management position, make sure that you show that you have the experience. If you have unrelated job titles, try and work around them so that the employer does not form a wrong image of your capabilities.
